Where to See Fall Colors This Year: Five Regions Worth the Drive

Visiting the fall colors of fall in the mountains.

Fall color is a short show. Peak lasts about a week in any one spot, then the leaves hit the ground. So the real question is where to see fall colors right now, not in theory.

I picked five regions that cover a lot of ground: Colorado, Lake Tahoe and the Eastern Sierra, the Arkansas Ozarks, East Texas, and New England. Some are peaking this week. Some are still warming up. One may already be a memory.

Dates come from 2026 forecasts and local reports. Nature doesn’t read forecasts, so check a local foliage report before you gas up the car.

Quick Guide: Fall Color Timing by Region

Colorado: An Early Year for the Aspens

Colorado is the golden standard for aspens. This year the show came early. A dry, warm year and a light winter snowpack stressed the trees. The Colorado State Forest Service warned that color could arrive ahead of schedule.

Forecasts put the central mountains and the Peak to Peak area in mid-September. The big resort country around Aspen, Vail, and Summit County followed in the second half of the month. The Front Range foothills ran from late September into early October.

By now, most of the state has likely wrapped up. Colorado’s southern ranges typically color later, so there may be stragglers. Check a current report before you drive anywhere.

If you missed it, put it on the calendar. Here is where to point the car next September:

One travel tip from the state: drive Tuesday through Thursday. Weekends in the mountains are crowded.

Northern California and Nevada: Tahoe and the Eastern Sierra

Aspens here turn gold against granite and blue water. It’s a different look from the Rockies, and it’s worth the trip.

Around Lake Tahoe, mid-October is often prime time. Sugar Pine Point State Park has aspens and black cottonwoods along the General Creek Trail. The Spooner Backcountry loop is an easy 2.5 miles of gold, orange, and red.

One heads-up: the trail to Marlette Lake is closed through 2026 for dam construction. Pick another trail.

Farther south, the Eastern Sierra along US 395 offers the most concentrated aspen color in California. The June Lake Loop is a favorite, with groves reflected in alpine lakes. Timing follows elevation:

Lower oak and dogwood country, such as Yosemite Valley, colors later. One tracker puts peak across most of California around Oct. 25.

Arkansas and the Ozarks: Winding Roads and Hardwoods

Arkansas does fall the old-fashioned way, with oaks, maples, hickories, and sweetgums. The color moves from the northern mountains toward the south.

The Almanac’s 2026 forecast puts the Ozarks at roughly Oct. 12 to 28. It puts the whole state at Oct. 19 to Nov. 4. Another tracker, as of late September, said this autumn was running about six days late.

The best drive is the Pig Trail Scenic Byway on Route 23. Its tight switchbacks run under a thick hardwood canopy. Late October is prime time.

Foresters in the Missouri Ozarks warned that late summer heat could shorten the viewing window. If the colors arrive, go soon. Don’t wait for a perfect weekend.

East Texas: Late, Subtle, and Worth the Wait

Texas is no Vermont. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something. But East Texas has a patchwork of sweetgum, oak, maple, and sassafras mixed in with the pines.

Texas peak is one of the latest in the nation, often running well into November. The Almanac’s forecast puts Texas at Nov. 2 to 11. Here’s where to go:

Texas Parks and Wildlife publishes a fall foliage report. Use it. A hot, dry fall can mean muted color, so keep expectations honest.

New England and the East Coast: The Main Event

This is the show everyone pictures. It’s also happening now. As of Oct. 7, the Boston Globe reported mid to high elevations in Vermont, New Hampshire, and interior Maine at the top of the leaf-peeping list.

Good bets right now:

Vermont peak generally comes before mid-October. If you’re heading north, move fast.

Farther south, the season runs later. Shenandoah National Park in Virginia typically peaks between Oct. 10 and 20. Northern Virginia, though, is forecast later than normal, with peak starting around Oct. 30.
