Maintaining healthy and thriving trees in your garden is essential for a beautiful and sustainable landscape. While there are many tree fertilizers available in the market, sometimes the best solution can be found right in your own pantry.

PBS-TV’s GardenRx offers an easy and effective recipe for a natural tree fertilizer that provides essential nutrients to promote growth and vigor. Here are some excellent ideas.

Ingredients:

  1. Banana peels: Rich in potassium, banana peels are excellent for promoting strong root development and overall tree health.
  2. 2. Epsom salt: This readily available mineral supplement contains magnesium and sulfur, both of which are vital nutrients for tree growth.
  3. 3. Coffee grounds: Coffee grounds are a fantastic source of nitrogen, an essential nutrient for stimulating leafy growth and promoting a lush canopy.
  4. 4. Crushed eggshells: Eggshells are rich in calcium, which helps strengthen the tree’s structure and improve nutrient uptake.
  5. Instructions:
  6. 1. Gather a handful of banana peels, making sure to remove any residual fruit.
  7. 2. Tear the banana peels into smaller pieces to aid in decomposition.
  8. 3. Collect approximately one cup of coffee grounds.
  9. 4. Crush and grind a few eggshells into smaller pieces.
  10. 5. In a large container or bucket, combine the banana peels, coffee grounds, and crushed eggshells.
  11. 6. Add one tablespoon of Epsom salt to the mixture.
  12. 7. Mix the ingredients thoroughly until they are well-combined.
  13. 8. Sprinkle the fertilizer mix around the base of the tree, ensuring it is spread evenly.
  14. 9. Gently work the fertilizer into the soil by lightly scratching the surface with a garden fork or rake.
  15. 10. Water the tree immediately after applying the fertilizer to help the nutrients penetrate the soil.
  16. 11. Repeat the process every three to four months throughout the growing season to provide a consistent supply of nutrients to your trees.
  17. Note: It is always recommended to conduct a soil test prior to applying any fertilizer to determine the specific nutrient requirements of your trees. This recipe is a general guideline and may not suit all tree species or soil conditions. Adjustments can be made based on the needs of your trees.
  18. Using a natural tree fertilizer like this DIY recipe from GardenRx can not only reduce reliance on synthetic products but also improve the overall health and resilience of your garden.

In our video GardenRx host Loren Nancarrow blends together the ultimate tree fertilizer recipe together with all natural ingredients.  This recipe may require a trip to the garden center but is well worth it and will have your trees looking health and lush.

Each of the below ingredients is added in equal parts. First start with rock dust, then add granulated gypsum, cotton seed meal and fish meal. If by chance the tree you’re fertilizing is a blooming tree, say a magnolia, and you want big beautiful blooms and and equal part of bone meal as well.
